This miniseries also showcased Paldea and featured Naranja Academy. However, Pokémon Horizons, being the main Pokémon anime series, had the final say. In episode 9 of Pokémon Horizons: The Series, our protagonists arrive in Paldea and we are treated to a glimpse of Pokémon Scarlet’s Naranja Academy. Then, in episode 10, we meet a familiar face from the games — the battle-happy rival Nemona — sporting her vibrant orange Naranja Academy uniform. So, it’s safe to say that Pokémon Scarlet’s version of Mesagoza is the one that gets the anime stamp of approval.
Now, before you start pondering the wider implications of this decision in the Pokémon universe, let me assure you that it doesn’t change much. The Pokémon games have always had version differences, with exclusive Pokémon and a tweaked trainer battle here and there. However, the anime usually combines these differences, creating a unified experience. It’s not like Ash Ketchum had to trade with another version of himself to catch ’em all. But sometimes, the version differences are too big to overlook, and this time it left a mark.
