There, he meets Dr. Katherine McMichaels, who runs tests on him and discovers his rapidly growing pineal gland. Fascinated by the Resonator’s power, McMichaels believes it could help in understanding mental illness. But Tillinghast refuses to turn the Resonator back on, fearing the consequences. Of course, McMichaels turns it on anyway, and chaos and madness ensue as Pretorious returns to attack them. The two scientists must find a way to put an end to the horror they’ve unleashed before it consumes the Earth.
What is “From Beyond” based on?
“From Beyond” is based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story of the same name, written in 1920 and first published in 1934. Stuart Gordon, with his love for Lovecraft, took the source material and added his own unique flair. This isn’t the first time Gordon has adapted Lovecraft’s work. His directorial debut, “Re-Animator,” was also based on a Lovecraft story and has since become a cult classic. McMichaels tries to take him back to the hospital, but he attacks and mutilates her boss. She ultimately decides to plant a bomb to destroy the Resonator and Tillinghast. In a thrilling climax, Pretorious swallows Tillinghast whole, leading to a struggle between their consciousnesses for control. McMichaels escapes the explosion but suffers a knee injury. In her bewildering state, she repeatedly screams, “It ate him!”
